ESET Online Scanner is a great free tool for detecting threats without installing antivirus software. It employs the same scanning technology as ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32, but only through an internet browser. It can scan tons of areas including autostart destinations, the registry and boot sectors. It can also attempt to fix problems during restarts and re-scan files that were previously deemed infected. It is not able to provide real-time security.

The interface is simple and user-friendly. The primary window displays the list of threats that have been identified that include their names as well as descriptions. The user is offered the option of deciding to either quarantine or delete the identified threats and also to create a custom scan profile to examine specific folders and files. The program can also be used offline, but an internet connection is required to download the required signatures and for completing the initial update.

The program can detect numerous kinds of malware, like viruses, Trojans and spyware. It can also detect potentially harmful applications. It can also remove rootkits which aren’t always cleared by other scanners. It may take a while to complete a complete scan and the software is heavy on the CPU. It also does not scan encrypted or password-protected files and does not always identify advanced zero-day malware. It is best used in combination with existing antivirus software as a second opinion scanner. The initial scan is for free but subsequent scans as well as solutions to problems require a fee.
